Counter Proposals

For the public artwork Counter Proposals, site-specific ideas for fictitious architectures were developed for current construction projects in Berlin.

The project targeted prominent locations such as the last remaining brownfield site in Berlin-Mitte at Checkpoint Charlie, the Estrel Tower, which significantly exceeded the surrounding eaves height in Neukölln, and the luxury complex Am Winterfeldt.

The alternatives ranged from concepts such as an SUV nursery and a whale rehabilitation clinic, to a clinic for violent communication, and a pigeon coop housing all the pigeons living in Berlin.

The counter-proposals were printed on banners and displayed at the construction sites. By scanning a QR code printed on the banners, passers-by could unlock a virtual reality (VR) experience on their smartphones. This digital overlay projected the initiative’s counter-proposals onto the real environment, enabling the public to visualise alternative uses of the space in real time.
